Maya
took up Bharata Natyam in October 1990
with the dancer Malavika in Paris. She received her instruction
for seven years.
From June 1991, she had the
opportunity to take part in the only training course going in France at
Grenoble, under the guidance of the famous Bharata Natyam teacher V.S.
Muttuswamy Pillai. This three weeks training course allowed her
to practice intense dancing and carnatic singing with Professor
Seturaman, as well as abhinaya
and nattuvangam
with the frensh dancer Dominique Delorme, a disciple of V.V Muttuswamy
Pillai.
Within the context of Dominique Delorme’s training course, she worked
with the frensh dancers Kalpana and Vacenta.
In May 1993, she presented her first three dances with Malavika as a coach
and with her, she prepared her first show at the Ministère des Finances,
in October 1995.
Then she put on, in hospitals shows patroned by the Association Tournesol.
In the same way she played for schools.
A second show was presented at the Ministère des Finances in September
1996. The famous composer Pierre Henry
happened to attend the show. He wrote an enthusiastic article about Maya
in « les Saisons de la Danse ».
In January 1998, Maya who
had got married, met Guru Kittappa Pillai at Thanjavur
and got a scholarship allowed by the Government (I.C.C.R) to go and study
with him for one year.
Before leaving, she presented a show at the Mandapa Centre after choreographies
of V.S.Muttuswamy Pillai, Ellapa Mudialar, Malavika and Dominique Delorme.
It was her last show in the style of Madras.
In 1999, Maya set out for
Thanjavur. She lived there and practised dancing with Guru Kittappa Pillai.
After Guru Pillai’s passing and according to his will, she presented
her arangetram on 14th
July 2000 Sangeetham Palace in Thanjavur (Guru’s Pillai
training had been taken over by Guru Herambanathan. The day before, in a
ritual ceremony, the salangai puja,
she had been given her bells.
Back in France in September 2000
she presented the programme of her arangetram at the Mandapa Centre.
From then on she went each year to India and worked with Guru Herambanathan.
There she was often given the opportunity of dancing for a public. She danced
in Pondichery too. At Guru Herambanathan’s request, she created the
association Thanjavur Heritage
in order to keep up the tradition (see under the head « transmission
»).
In 2003, Maya presented a
show made from choreographies passsed down from generation to generation
in India. The title of it was « Shiva
in all his forms ». The show was given in many french towns (Epinal,
Vittel, Massy, Troyes, Aubergenville
in Saint Thérèse Church, Mantes-la-Jolie).
In 2004, Maya met a painter,
François Hilsum, choreographied a show entitled « Vibration
» inspired by one of his oil-paintings (the public could see the
painting on the stage). The first night was in auditorium of the Opera
of Massy(91), on June 21st.
Since October 2004, Maya has
passed a vocational course focused on the 108 Karanas and given by the dancer
Manochhaya.
From January to May 2005 Maya has cooperated with Hubert Gonzales, a teacher
at the elementary school in Frémainville and every two week on thursday
morning, she's been asked to set up a workshop for beginner's courses in
Indian dance.
Throughout the year, Maya's instruction (in the three nursery sections)
has been resumed by their school teachers. So India has become a colourful
background for their training (with geography, cookery, music, wild life,
etc...)
By the end of the year, the children were given a dance certificate, after
passing an exam testifying to their basic knowledge in the Bharata Natyam
technique : rythmics, body movements, coordination, management of the space.
On that occasion, the children presented Maya with a tale they had imainged
and illustrated themselves. In return, Maya promised them to choreograph
their tale. Each page corresponds to a scene. Thus was born the show entitled
"Dance from the heart". It takes its origin
in Maya's deep conviction that Bharata Natyam is art appealing to everyone's
imagination and to children's to begin with. That's why she teaches the
youngest ones (from three) and sets up workshops for them. Dancing develops
their imaginative world. Theirs bodies voice their feelings.
As usual, Maya to India in July 2005, in order to go back to her roots and to continue with learning new choreographies in the pure Thanjavur style.
In
2006, Maya has broaden her
teaching: beginners training, lectures, opening of additional classes.
In June, Thanjavur Heritage association celebrated the fifth
anniversary of the Bharata Natyam dance classes in Vienne-en Arthie.
Maya will start a Parisian beginners section,

She is part of the Lille3000 festival.

in Vienne-en-Arthies.

august audience (educational and sport ministers)

Françoise Blévot.
Concurrently she goes on with her private practice as a physiotherapist.

Pierre Henry
