In
September 1998, Maya started practising yoga in order to prepare for living
a year in India, thanks to the government scholarship she had been awarded
to immerse herself into Bharata Natyam. She became the pupil of
Beatrice Bouchillou who trained her in the Madras tradition directly
transmitted by Yvonne Millerand, her mother, a disciple of Shri T.Krishnamacharya
in Madras.
That preparatory year of yoga was very important for mind and body. Practising
yoga proved to be a real support in India when, after daylong dancing sessions,
you call yourself into question.
As well as an invaluable physical training, allowing to cope constantly with
the new climate, the new rythm of life and the imperative necessity of making
efforts, yoga proved the best means to get in connection with one's inner
self and together one's strength.
Maya had learnt a lot from this experience, that's why, back home to Paris,
she attented the "Ecole française de Yoga"
(E.F.Y) a training school for future teachers. She wanted to deepen her knowledge
of India and strenghen bonds between dance and yoga.
Beatrice Bouchillou, a trainer at the E.F.Y, was her teacher and she gave
her weekly intuition moreover. Every year concluded with a full week training
session.
Once
the last exams have been passed, a sort of "short thesis" must be
written and defended. It means this four year courses is over.
The subject of Maya's master's thesis was : "Tradition
and Transmission, a living memory". It was devoted to dance, yoga
and physiotherapy, three disciplines as tightly plaited as a tress (and as
in Maya's way of life too). This thesis was published in two parts, in issues
227 and 228 of the "Carnets du yoga" de l'E.F.Y.
Another publication in "les Carnets du Yoga" :
"Regard sur le bharata Natyam", 2005, n° 242 (A
few Words about Bharata Natyam)

Maya started teaching in December 2001 to a small group of three children
and five adults in Vienne-en-Arthies (www.vienne-en-arthies.fr),
a small village in the Vexin Français.
Maya happily developped a method of her own to put the Bharata Natyam within
the understanding of children in the western context and the respect of tradition.
With children the dance takes all its meaning.

Thanjavur Heritage means shows, meetings, conferences and workgroups for all circles (such as schools, hospitals, associations). Thanjavur Heritage addresses all kinds of people to share in tamil culture with delight, to build bridges between Bharata Natyam and other sorts of arts. This rich sacred dance enters into dialogue with painting (www.mir-w-art.org),acting the practice of yoga and martial arts (www.kyudo.fr)
In January 2005, the Ballets libre cours de Troyes, under the direction of Chantal Dubois welkomed Maya to lead their seventh Master Class...
Maya
was connected to the tradition of Tanjore through Guru K.P.Kittappa
Pillai in Thanjavur. On his mother's side and on his father's side
too, he descended from the famous Quartet of Tanjore.
In the 19th century, the four brothers Chinnaiha, Ponnaiah, Sivanandam et
Vadivelu codified the presentation of the Bharata Natyam (margam)
from the alarippu to the tillana, as it is nowadays.
At the end of
Maya's arangetram (which took place after the passing of Guru Kittappa
Pillai), Guru B.Hermabanathan asked her to transmit into France the education
she had received. Thanjavur Heritage was born
from this fatherly relation from masters to disciples.
In 2007 she met Aruna
Subramaniam in Thanjavur and recieved an intensive training under
her guidance.
